My Story
At the 20 week scan, I heard the words “hole in diaphragm”, “collapsed lung”, “heart pushed aside”. Being asked to make a decision about whether or not to have further tests there and then (which posed a risk to the baby), my instincts told me to run away, hide and protect my unborn baby from this thing I had never heard of before - Congenial Diaphragmatic Hernia.
Needing to understand this condition further, we came across the Congenial Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) UK charity, who provided lots of reading materials, phone calls, a support package and connected us to a community of people who also had received this shocking diagnosis and were going through the same challenges at a similar time.
CDH UK provides support for families in this way, and supports those families where sadly the baby does not survive. They also work to further the study and research into better management and treatment of CDH. This includes assisting the medical community in finding the cause and prevention, plus raising awareness to all.
Well as you all know, Meadow is amazing, she absolutely smashed it and we are so very thankful that she has and continues to do so well. And of course we will be forever thankful to the amazing staff at Kings College Hospital for everything they did which allowed us to bring Meadow home after only 19 days in hospital.
Almost 3 years now and CDH UK continues to support our family. Every Mother worries about their child, and for me, the worry of reherniation never goes away. I am now connected with numerous families as part of a bigger CDH UK network, with those who are going through their own CDH journey from childhood and beyond into adulthood.
With my birthday and Christmas coming up, many of you will be sending me a card, some may also buy me a gift. However this year, I ask that instead you use that money to make a donation to CDH UK. This could be the cost of a card and postage stamp, or the money which you would have likely spent on a gift. Your money will be gratefully received, supporting this charity which has a special place in my heart. And most importantly your money will go towards supporting babies and their families across the UK who are affected by this condition.
